RAINFOREST
HABITAT
Port Douglas
This was constructed in 1988 on 8 acres of land at the gateway
to Port Douglas. This ECO HABITATS concept of a walk-through
fauna and flora exhibit was totally new and somewhat of a surprise
to the zoological world.
A series of lakes and waterfalls, viewed from suspended timber
walkways provide the visitors with an exciting and ideal opportunity
to view its inhabitants from a new perspective.
Over 70 species of Australian birds are exhibited in, as nearly
as possible, natural surrounds. Other fauna displayed include
butterflies, reptiles, macropods, koalas, crocodiles, native fish,
frogs, etc., giving visitors the freedom to become acquainted
with most native species of Australia. A wide selection of Australian
rainforest flora is also represented.
A
recent visit by the President of the United States, found he and
his wife extending their planned stay by over an hour, much to
the joy of the staff, and we the designers.
Despite
an economic recession and lengthy dispute within the airline industry,
this project has prospered, winning top tourism awards.
It
has bee described by the curators of the world famous San Diego
Zoo as "the Zoological Park of the 21st Century"
It
is now firmly established as one of Australia's major tourist
attractions, and in 1995 became a public company.
