"RAINFOREST
HABITAT"
BIRD OF PARADISE DISPLAY
LAE UNIVERSITY
Papua New Guinea
In
1994 ECO HABITATS was approached by the Papua New Guinea Government
to design, build and landscape a specialised canopy structure
to house twelve species of its country's endangered Birds of Paradise.
Initially
this was to perform primarily as a research and breeding facility.
However after we presented the designs, it was decided that this
could be opened on a limited basis as a public exhibit.
Again
the use of suspended timber walkways, together with lush tropical
plants, has made this a favourite tourist destination.
Its
success as a tourist attraction now seems to be of more importance
than its research facility. In fact P. & O. Cruise Ships have
altered their itinerary to visit Lae, to give their passengers
the opportunity of viewing the birds and butterflies in the University
complex.
